SEO still has a steep learning curve

This fact isn’t new: if your website loads slowly, a large portion of visitors will quickly leave. In the earlier days of SEO, sending out press releases with keyword optimized anchor texts would get you a dozens of backlinks. In some fortunate cases, this would even make your site crawl to the top positions on SERPs. So, eventually Press releases became a tactic to build links and rank high. Enter one of your keywords into the search box of the search engine of your choice to determine the sites with the top search engine placement for this word. You are aiming for keywords that are frequently used by your target audience, but do not have many competing pages. Ranking in the search engines can be hard. Especially if the competition in your niche is high. As you probably know, you should start with doing your keyword research: getting inside the heads of your audience, knowing exactly what words they use and what they are searching for. But then what? A page that’s no longer working can affect your site’s rankings in search engines, but also user experience and the engagement.

What I find lacking in those blogs is they don’t take in stride the transition of content from the first-among-the-equal to being synonymous with SEO. In order for backlink checkers to exist, the entire web (i.e. billions of pages) has to be crawled, regularly re-crawled and stored in a monstrous database. The costs and challenges associated with doing this are HUGE. Giving readers relevant information and links to interesting third party websites is definitely the easier of the two methods for creating quality links. Link Building is about more than just giving people the information they asked for though; if they never see those links, then those links aren’t really any good. For Search Engines, backlinks help to determine the page’s importance and value (i.e. authority). Historically, the quantity of backlinks was an indicator of a page’s popularity.
